Causes of Curled Shingles on Your Roof

Have you ever taken a look at the shingles on your roof and noticed that some pieces were missing or deteriorating? If yes, that’s probably the result of wind damage. If, however, you notice  curled shingles on your roof , they’re most likely due to one of three things: your attic has a lack of ventilation, the shingles may have been installed improperly and/or the actual product came with associated defects.

Attic space ventilation plays a role in how well a roof holds up over time. If an attic lacks proper ventilation, moisture build-up ends up condensing on roof sheathing, leading to shingle curl. When installing new roofs , Central Roofing, Siding & Windows Co. almost always installs a ridge vent, which is designed to improve attic ventilation in both the winter and summer months.

Meanwhile, when installers put shingles on the roof, they’re supposed to make sure the sealing strip on one shingle lines up with the sealing strip on the next shingle according to the manufacturer’s recommendation. If they’re not lined up correctly, the shingle tabs aren’t secure and will curl upward or inward over time.

Another major reason shingles curl is because they were improperly nailed. For instance, if the installer drove the nail into the sealing strip, after a couple thermal cycles of heating and cooling, the nail can back out. The result? Shingle tabs lift and part from the seal, causing curling.

Finally, product defects may be to blame. Some shingle manufacturers use poor quality substrate or have inadequate adhesion of bituminous coating and grit, leading to shingle curling. To avoid this issue, Central Roofing, Siding & Windows Co. recommends  Certain Teed, a company renowned for their sustainable building products . That said,  GAF  and  TAMKO  also make high quality shingles.

Should you notice your roof has curled shingles, call Central Roofing, Siding & Windows Co. in Rockville, MD at  (301) 881-2424  to discuss what can be done to correct the problem.
