Preparing for a Roofing Contractor Visit

Central Exteriors • January 5, 2023

If you are getting a new roof installed or doing some roof maintenance, you’ll likely need to have a roofing contractor come over to your home. A contractor will be able to take care of your roofing needs and answer any questions you may have about your roof. While a contractor will provide full service, there are a few things that you may want to do before one arrives. Here are a few of them.

Understand the Process or Ask

Do you know where the contractor will be working? What areas of the property will they need to access? How long will they be there? What tools and equipment will they be bringing? These are all important parts of the process to understand. If there’s anything you don’t know, ask. The contractor is there to help you and asking questions will make everything go more smoothly, so they’ll be more than willing to answer and help you out.

Set and Communicate a Budget

Before you start any roof installation or repair project, you’ll need to understand the budget. Having open communication on the budget and making sure that all parties involved understand the cost, terms, and time frame involved is beneficial to everyone. You will know exactly what you will be expected to pay and they will know that you agree to the price. It makes the entire project much easier.

It's important to discuss the budget before any work is started. Many contractors will provide you with a quote for the work before the project begins. Review it and make sure you understand the price and what’s included. As mentioned, if you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.

Prep Inside

While the contractors will do their best to prevent any debris or dust, it’s still a good idea to take your own precautions and preparations. Depending on the work being done, it could be a good idea to prevent any of your belongings from being damaged.

If there are any items inside your home that are underneath the work area, move these out of the way or cover them with a drop cloth to keep them clean. Furniture should also be covered.  For roofing projects, this is particularly important if skylights are being replaced.  Dirt and debris can accumulate through the years and fall into the house when a skylight is removed.

It’s also a good idea to remove pictures and other items that may be hanging from your walls. The work being done on your roof could potentially shake the walls and you don’t want anything to fall or be damaged.

Prep Outside

Any roofing work or roof replacement project will require space outside your home. The roofers will need space for their vehicles, tools, and equipment. They may require access to certain areas of your property. Once you know what they’ll need and where they’ll be working, keep these areas clear.

One of the most important things you can do is to move your vehicles out of your driveway. This not only gives the team more room to work, park their vehicles, and store their equipment, but it also ensures that your vehicles won’t be damaged.

You’ll also want to protect your bushes, plants, etc. with a tarp to keep them safe from dust and debris. If you have any lawn ornaments or patio furniture in the area, these items should be moved or protected as well.  Please communicate with your roofing foreman if you have any concerns.  They are there to help.

It’s also a good idea to let your neighbors know that you are having roofing work done. This will allow them to move any items or vehicles themselves, but it will also inform them that there could be additional noise or debris in the area.
